4-Head WOODMASTER 4000 – key to Mark’s eye-popping Great Room

Mark Peck wanted INDUSTRIAL SPEED and CAPACITY to make all the flooring and trim for his 1,100 square foot Great Room addition — he got it all with the Woodmaster 4000’s 4-side molder/planer

Great room addition with tray ceiling and hardwood floors all made with the Woodmaster 4000

“I got my Woodmaster 4000 for a big project I took on — making all the flooring and trim for the 1,100 square foot addition to our home. This addition has a great room, master bedroom with a ‘tray’ ceiling, quarter-sawn oak floor, black walnut trim, and a spa room. I already had a Grizzly® planer, but I wanted something with industrial capacity to handle a bigger volume of work a lot faster.

Here’s Mark Peck in his shop with his Woodmaster 4000. He used this 4-side molder/planer to turn trees from his property into all the flooring and trim used in his impressive new Great Room

Woodmaster shapes 4 sides in 1 pass – watch video!

The Woodmaster 4000 is a four-side molder/planer. It has four cutting heads to shape all four sides of a board in one pass — left side, right side, top, and bottom. So it produces S4S lumber — surfaced on all four sides in one pass. I can install different knives for planing or molding, depending on what I’m making. Woodmaster has many knives for this machine: stair rail, flooring, and all kinds of trim and moldings. I can really fine-tune the work this machine does by choosing and setting up tooling and dialing the power feed to go at just the right feed rate. Watch video!

Competitor’s 4-side planer had 2 drawbacks

I wanted an industrial-duty machine. I did deep research including a competitor’s four-side planer but theirs was made in Europe so I knew it would be hard to get support. And they had a very long wait time. Woodmaster’s made in the USA.

“Good machine, worth the money”

I give the 4000 high marks. It’s a good machine and worth the money. It puts out really nice wood products. For example, the joints in my quarter-sawn oak floor are tight as can be. There’s not even room for a hair between two floorboards.

Woodmaster’s advertising says this machine has ‘industrial toughness and capacity on a small-shop budget.’ I agree with that. Its production rate is six times faster than my old Grizzly planer.

We had contractors build the structure and my wife, Mary, and I made all the interior materials — all the flooring, siding, wainscoting, and material for the ceiling. I call the ceiling boards ‘boxcar siding.’

Mark turned his own trees into high-value flooring and trim

I’ve been in agriculture all my life. As a farmer, I have to be very hands-on and accomplish things myself. Besides farming 800 acres, I own 700 acres of mature woodland. There are big white pines that were planted during the Great Depression, black walnut, hickory, cherry, and more. My love of the woods got me interested in sawing my trees into lumber and using them to make my own building materials.

Mark owns 700 acres of mature woodland that yielded all these beauties and many more. Looks to us like the biggest ones here are 30″ or so in diameter

I got a TimberKing sawmill back in about 2008. It runs great, it’s USA-made, and I really like it. Especially its 4-post head. That makes it more substantial and foolproof than other mill designs. Having my TimberKing lets me saw a lot of lumber. That led me to getting my Woodmaster 4-head molder/planer.

I had trees felled, then I sawed them into lumber, dried it in my kiln, then put everything through the Woodmaster 4000. I ran the 4000 and Mary took the boards off. She handled the staining and finishing and we teamed up on applying the polyurethane with an airless sprayer.

As a finishing touch, Mark added this impressive trophy to his truly eye-popping Great Room!

What’s next for Mark?

Right now I’m using my Woodmaster 4000 to make materials for an addition my brother-in-law’s putting on his home. Beyond that, I’m planning to retire next year and do a lot more wood production. Maybe I’ll do custom work like custom doors. Or make S4S lumber in volume. Not to make money, but just for the enjoyment of woodworking.

Turn your own trees into valuable wood products

This Woodmaster 4000 could serve anybody who has a sizable woodlot and enjoys woodworking. The idea of being able to turn your own trees from your own land into beautiful flooring, furniture, trim, or whatever is very enticing for hands-on folks like me. And so is the idea of making and selling what you make.

I’d say the folks at Woodmaster put their heads together and came up with a very well-made machine that puts out great quality wood products at a high production rate.”
